About a month ago I attended the Winter School on Intercultural Competence at the University of Groningen, Netherlands. The Intercultural Competence Development for Professionals course provided an enriching experience that expanded my understanding of communication styles, values, behaviours, identity, and intercultural sensitivity.
The opportunity to learn from Dr. Nagesh Rao and Drs. Michaela Carriere, along with peers of different backgrounds, perspectives, and lived experiences, challenged my assumptions and deepened my understanding about the complexities of working in the field of intercultural competence. Engaging in role-plays, project based learning activities, group discussions and collaborative problem-solving, I gained a deeper appreciation for the unique challenges and opportunities faced by people from different cultures. It also allowed me to develop practical strategies to navigate complex situations that may arise in various contexts.
Attending the training course with a group of like-minded individuals was a transformative experience that enhanced my cultural awareness, empathy, and communication skills. I look forward to applying what I have learned to create positive change in my interactions with others, in my work, and to contribute to building a more inclusive, compassionate, and culturally aware society.
